Mondeca is an SME, dedicated to Semantic knowledge, business subjects, metadata and their various forms of organisation. Efficient access to distributed information, automatic classification of content, automatic knowledge base maintenance, management of large terminologies, effectiveness of Enterprise Content Management solution, easy access for clients, citizens and partners to company content through rich semantic portals, management of collaborative knowledge bases are Mondeca's every day task.

Mondeca's product, Intelligent Topic Manager (ITM) is an ontology-based solution for Content Classification and Annotation, Taxonomy, Thesaurus, Lexicon, Knowledge base Management. It is a robust component, conforms to Semantic Web standards (OWL, Topic Maps, RDF, Web Services) and is easy to integrate with Content Management Systems and Search solutions. ITM federates, organizes and gives access to corporate content and knowledge, based on the client application’s ontological and terminological resources. It also provides some support for assisted knowledge acquisition, semantic annotation and content classification using text mining and classification components (see publications).

The solutions built around ITM are extremely diversified:

  • Management of a metadata repository to federate content distributed throughout the enterprise
  • Creation of a multilingual portal, indexing, linking and describing a region’s tourism resources
  • Management or organization of a documentation system based on thesauri, classification plans and knowledge bases on the subjects to hand (people, products, works, facts, organization…)
  • Collaborative knowledge base on industrial products, allowing in-depth portrayal of objects and their relationships, business procedures, etc.

Mondeca has strong experience in ontology modelling and ontology management: ITM is used by Industry, Media, Defence, Publishers and local government authorities to manage well organised subjects and content in Home Security applications, Collaborative Knowledge bases, Semantic Portals, Call Center information systems, Documentation systems, Automatic Publishing processes and Metadata repositories. Mondeca’s clients include PSA, EADS, Novartis, Hachette Filipacchi Media, French Police Department, Ministry of Tourism, local government authorities, Lexis Nexis, Wolter Kluwers, etc.

Acting in the fast moving fields of the Semantic Web and Ontology, Mondeca's dedicated teams are significantly involved in R&D activities and standardisation work. Mondeca is an active member of W3C contributing to the OWL standard requirements, one of the founding companies behind XML Topic Maps standards and participated in several European IST research projects:

Moses: IST collaborative project: Semantic Knowledge representation for organization, federation and interoperability of university portals; Semantic search engine based on natural language processing.

HiTouch: European project CRAFT: Enhanced access and valorisation of regional distributed tourist resources, through federation and organization supported by multilingual ontology and knowledge base. Customisation of access.

Moreover, Mondeca’s solutions were awarded the “IST Prize 2003” by the European Commission for being one of the 20 most innovative IT solutions to organise, federate, retrieve, and publish distributed knowledge assets.

Mondeca’s main areas of interest and research expertise to be contributed to TAO are in the above mentioned areas, where they will act as a technology and solution provider. Mondeca’s interest in TAO goes beyond a specific workpackage and thus it will actively contribute to several workpackages. It will be involved more closely in RTD on ontology learning and semantic augmentation of legacy content. Mondeca’s team has already a strong experience in this area of research. Indeed, Mondeca has developed an intelligent module consisting in semantically annotating documents and populating ITM’s ontologies from information extraction on semi- or unstructured textual resources. This module is vital for ITM and it was the answer to one of its limitations: the users had to manually instantiate the knowledge base which was an expensive and error-prone process. Automatic augmentation of content is thus a key issue for Mondeca, but at present ITM only covers unstructured texts. Therefore Mondeca will extend this research to other types of content such as images, videos, structured legacy content, etc.

Role in the project

Another limitation of ITM is that the ontology is also manually modelled according to each application’s need. Therefore, the goal in TAO is to learn automatically the ontology from the application itself and then improve it in an iterative process before importing it in ITM. Thus the TAO overall ontology modelling process will be proven in the future commercial applications.

Mondeca are also extremely interested in implementing large-scale Semantic Web Services and in contributing to the TAO methodology for transitioning applications to ontologies. Last but not least, Mondeca will also actively participate in the dissemination and exploitation activities due to their rich experience in that area.
