TAO Web Applications and Ontologies
Description
Content Augmentation tools automate semantic annotation and consolidation process. These include: KCIT, CA Manager and Annotator UI.
KCIT is an Information Extraction application, based on several general-purpose GATE components plus an ontology-based gazetteer which is capable of producing ontology-aware annotations automatically, i.e., annotations referring to classes, instances and properties in the ontology.
KCIT is exposed as a Web service, which has been embedded into CA Manager Framework.
To know more on KCIT, contact Danica Damljanovic.
Content Augmentation Manager or CA Manager service automatically indentifies the instances of a given ontology that appears in a web page. Those instances can then be used to semantically annotate the web page.
It connects to the Content Augmentation service to extract the relevant information, i.e. named entities such as Persons, Locations, Organisations, Dates, and so on. That information is controlled and consolidated by ITM according to the given ontology model and the existing instances of its concepts.

The Annotation User Interface or Annotation UI allows the end-user to control the outputs produced by the CA Manager, being the semantic annotations or the knowledge instances extracted from the various contents.
The Annotation UI is composed of four panels, one for each type of resources, and proposes the following functionalities:
- displaying the content of the annotated document (text, image, video) and editing it when it is a textual document (TXT, HTML, XML at least),
- editing, adding and validating all the annotations : administrative (e.g. Dublin Core metadata) and semantic (domain-oriented annotations semantically defined in an ontology),
- editing, adding and validating new knowledge instances (entities) extracted from the artefact and to be added to the ontology repository,
- displaying the domain ontology and the terminological resources (taxonomies, thesaurus, etc.) used for annotating the content.
